HospitalityDNB hands the reins over to Joanna Ranson, who interviews Lung in advance of Hospitality Cambridge on 12th March and Hospitality Bristol on 29th April…
It has become increasingly difficult to talk about Drum and Bass in Wales without mentioning the brightest young producer to make waves in the industry since High Contrast. Lung, with his atmospheric melodies and hauntingly beautiful tracks, has started to put Cardiff on the map and paved the way for other up and coming producers from the city. Whilst the Drum and Bass scene should be bracing itself for the Welsh invasion, we caught up with James Ellaway a.k.a Lung to chat to him about his forthcoming release on Med School and what playing at Hospitality means to him.
So things have been going really well for you recently. How does it feel to be accomplishing what it takes other producers many years to do – to achieve recognition?
It feels great! All I’ve ever wanted to do is make music, from as far back as I can remember and be able to make a living from doing so. I’m not quite there yet, there’s still a long road ahead, but one I know that I’m going to enjoy and can’t wait to get stuck into.
Being born and raised in Cardiff, you’ve contributed to and witnessed the development of the scene there. How would you describe the current state of drum and bass in the city?
I think it’s great. I’ve only been within the scene myself probably just over two years; from everything I’ve heard it was vibrant before that. Aperture (where I hold my residency) has been great though. Talking from personal experience, it’s led me to meet many influential people and network. There’s a strong sense of community about the night and everyone is friendly and welcoming. It’s just a nice thing to be a part of. I guess it’s kind of the hub of the scene, pretty much all the producers and DJs here go to that night alone. Not forgetting all the other nights we have here pushing interesting music like Signature and the nights in Cardiff Arts Institute. So yeah, it’s a really healthy and exciting scene to be in.
Have you been offered any advice or tips from High Contrast, Cardiff’s biggest DNB export?
I met Lincoln a while back through Dave Shaw who runs Aperture here. He’s been great, I mean you know everyone has their inspirations and their idols, if you will, and then eventually you realise they’re just people – just like you! But yeah, Linc is great with advice, it’s just nice to have the support of someone so respected within the scene. Plus I’ve just heard some of his new album, and oh my gosh, there’s going to be a lot of surprises on there! It sounds amazing so far. As for collaborations, yeah I think it’s safe to say that you’ll hear something one day, for sure!
Do you have a particular creative process for making a track? How do you go about it?
I’ll often think up riff or drum ideas in my head and then do my best to replicate them on my computer then. But 9 times out of 10 I’ll literally just open up a project, start with a basic drum beat, and just keep adding to and playing around with it until I come up with something I can work with. I tend to write a bit backwards, so I’ll write the main section of the track first (after the drop) and then I’ll build the intro, outro and breakdown from elements within that main section, taking bits out here and there.
Your track ‘Relapse’ is set for release on Med School at the end of March. How did the signing to the label come about and how are you feeling about it?
I’m absolutely ecstatic. It’s always been one of those things, everyone has their favourite labels and would love to put something out through them. Med School is the sister label to Hospital Records, and I’d been following the label closely for a good while, especially for the previous New Blood 010 release. I just loved the ethos of the label, and it brought a lot of new artists to my attention, producers like Stray, Circa, Royalston, obviously Synkro.
I’d been working on ‘Relapse’ for a couple of days, and decided to send a demo version over to Ash Howard and Chris Goss, got an email back discussing it further and a few edits down the line it was signed up for ‘New Blood 011′. It’s just completely surreal to be a part of it in all honesty, still hasn’t quite sunk in!
Fresh from playing Hospitality Cardiff at the beginning of February, how was the experience for you and are you looking forward to playing at the forthcoming Hospitality events in Cambridge and Bristol?
I’ve been to a few Hospitality events in Cardiff, and yeah the one just gone has probably been my favourite. It’s just wicked fun to be playing on that stage to be honest, the size of that sound system is immense and to hear your tunes on that rig, let alone your favourite tunes from other artists, there’s no experience like it. I particularly enjoyed Nu:Tone’s set with Natalie Williams and can’t wait for his new album Words and Pictures. High Contrast’s set was amazing too and If We Ever VIP near enough took the roof off the building.
So yeah, I just absolutely cannot wait to play Hospitality Cambridge and Hospitality Bristol. My mate Edd (Eleven8), who is also on Med School will be at Cambridge playing too, alongside Joe Syntax and Blu Mar Ten. Then in Bristol, Klute is also in the Med School room. It’s safe to say I’m pretty excited about it all.
What can we expect from Lung in the future? Any collaborations lined up?
Definitely many collaborations. I’ve currently got two on the go, one with someone a little closer to home, and one with Eleven8 which is quite a change of style for me as it’s quite a dark one. Also I’ll be collaborating with Dutch producer Myrkur in the coming weeks, strongly suggest anyone into their dubstep goes and checks out his soundcloud page.
And finally, any last words?
Yes, massive shouts to: Ash Howard, Alicia ESP, Dave Shaw, Gareth Tru, Mike Signature, Maxx Roach, Logic, Sovex, Undersound, Eleven8, Magenta, The Daily Street and DroneBoy Laundry.
