City Spotlight: Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a quaint gem of a town, and there is a wealth of contemporary musical culture within the city limits and beyond. Hospitality first visited Heidelberg last year for a prescribed bass injection, bringing serial vibes providers Camo & Krooked, Fred V & Grafix, and S.P.Y supported by MCs Dynamite & Fava. The event was such a success another set of the Hospital elite felt necessary to come and join in the fun, with High Contrast, Logistics, TC and Etherwood hitting up the Halle02 for round 2.

Located in the heart of south-west Germany, sitting on the river Neckar is Heidelberg, the nations oldest university town, and a leading tourist hot-spot. This gorgeous gothic renaissance town is surrounded by thick, vibrant forestry and an impressive mountain range that encases the town making it a true spectacle to behold! Overlooking the town is the majestic centrepiece of this riverside paradise, Heidelberg Castle. This 600-year-old fortress served as a royal residence during the middle ages and renaissance, but now plays host for all manner of local festivities such as dinner banquets, concerts and the Heidelberg Castle Festival in the summer. There is a wealth of culture to explore in this continental town, and on the 28th of January 2017, Hospitality will be touching down to give Germany a taste of some world leading D+B.

The region is no stranger to D+B, as the Heidelberg/Mannheim area plays home to Kaiza, one-half of Instinkt and owner of Tilt & T3K Recordings. Having achieved success as a local DJ running a series of events, his journey into production begun after founding ‘Trio-Music Crew’. With a host of digital releases and vinyl singles under his belt, this techno and neuro-inspired producer has churned out some serious bangers in his day, and his label T3K recordings can boast releases from the likes of Sunchase, Mefjus, Rune, C.A.2.K & Forbidden Society. You can check out his VIP rework from his and Runes joint alias ‘Instinkt’ below.

Heidelberg has been one of the finest cities to grace the Hospitality map, and because of this we are returning yet again at the end of January 2017. For a further injection of some heat during the heart of the German winter, you can expect an all-star line-up featuring Danny Byrd, Etherwood, Krakota with Dynamite and Fava on hosting duties, and TC as a special guest. A recipe for success, if we’ve ever seen one. The Halle02 will serve as residence once again, an old post-war freight station that has been rejuvenated into a space for contemporary art and youth culture. Since the transformation just over a decade ago, 300+ events have taken place and they can boast over 150,000 visitors each year. Concerts, exhibitions, parties, trade fairs or markets, this multi-purpose artistic space is a true wonder of the town, and we are ecstatic that we get to return for what will be a night to remember!

In a culturally rich environment like Heidelberg, it is no wonder that there is a thriving D+B scene. 2R2E Promotions provide the beats with some frequency, throwing regular events at the Halle02 showcasing drum and bass in its entirety. With old-school dons such as Nicky Blackmarket, Original Sin, Micky Finn and Aphrodite all gracing 2R2E shows in the last year, alongside a set of talented residents, these guys have been smashing dances for a few years now, and show no sign of slowing down. Bass Station, another group of promoters who are also keeping things alive in this town and definitely deserve a mention. Catering more so to the Upfront & Jump Up crowds, smaller scale and more intimate events are their bread and butter, favouring the cosier Karlstorbahnhof among other venues to provide an experience like no other.

Aside from the clubs and music this town has to offer, there is a wealth of culture abundant in Heidelberg, from rare classical cinema at the Karlstorkino and Gloria & Gloriette theatre houses, to a host of museums dedicated to the towns rich academic history. However, it is the romantic poetry and art that Heidelberg is most famed for. Heralded as the centre of Romanticism in Germany, this movement against the classical literary theories that were so common during the Enlightenment can be accredited to the incredible scenery and landscape surrounding the town. We recommend trekking up one of the eternal relics from the romantic epoch, Philosophers Walk. This pathway located between the north banks of the Neckar and below the base of the Heilgenberg (Saints Mountain) provides breathtaking views of the Old Town, Castle and the wider Heidelberg landscape that will leave you breathless and inspired from the gorgeous views that await.

Just 15 minutes down the road from Heidelberg is Mannheim, the 3rd largest city in the region. Although Mannheim is famous for being the HQ of major corporations such as IBM & Siemens,  there is some pretty decent D+B going down too. A new monthly D&B club night at ‘Prime’ has seen 2R2E Promotions throw some serious parties. Teddy Killerz, Rene Lavice, Serial Killaz amongst others have all graced the decks at their parties and just a stones throw away from Heidelberg. There is nothing better for the scene than fixed, regular doses of D&B and this monthly fixture is keeping the scene alive and well. Big up Mannheim, keep on going.

We would very much recommend kick-starting the new year the best way possible by heading over to Heidelberg for a party to remember, and for a slice of some true continental culture like no other. A host of amazing D+B talent & a town with so much beauty it became the German centre for one of the most influential art forms in human history. All placed together perfectly adjacent to a tranquil river and rolling mountains, amalgamating into total sensory bliss.
