On July 16th Hospitality returns to Barcelona’s favourite bass bringing spot, The Bus. Taking to the decks will be Hospital’s head honcho London Elektricity, Nu:Tone, Etherwood and Lynx. Ahead of the show we caught up with Sevi from Middleground – one of Barcelona’s most prominent promoters and someone who sure knows how to put on a party.
Hey Sevi, thanks for chatting with us! How’s it going?
Everything’s all good, so busy right now with a festivals and gigs, I’m also organizing the summer which is going to be hot!
Of all the ones you’ve been to or worked on, which Hospitality has been your favourite?
All of the Hospitality events are great, it’s always a lot of fun whenever any of the Hospital artists are here. For me the most special show was Sonar in 2013, it was totally packed and Logistics killed it! It was awesome.
How did you get into promoting shows in Barcelona?
I arrived in Barcelona in 2002 and started putting on free parties in squats. Back then Barcelona was really open to doing events like this because of the industrial oil areas there were a lot of empty spaces so it was easy to bring in a big sound system, a lot of beers, ten video projectors and the parties would go on for three days…
This finished around 2007, when I started putting nights on in venues like LA Cova and Razzmatazz.
Have you always been a big drum & bass fan?
I love music, the best thing about music as a whole is that you can listen to any style at any moment of the day. But yeah, drum & bass, reggae, jungle and dub these are may favourite genres.
What’s your favourite show that you’ve ever worked on?
I organized the DUB ACADEMY stage at the Rototom Reggae Sunsplash, this was my favourite event by far. It wasn’t only the music but also the good vibes there, as well as the reasonable prices of drinks! My family and I all go and stay there fore ten days, ten days of reggae music at the beach, with my daughter – my queen…sounds good eh?
Although, you know after twenty years listening to Goldie, the first time I booked him was really special for me.
What’s your best backstage story from all your years of promoting?
Oh my god! You know what, this is TOP SECRET hahaha!
If you could be any drum & bass artist for a day who would it be?
I would want Goldie’s selection skills, with the bass of Noisia, the technique of Andy C, the drop of Camo & Krooked and the happiness of Fred V & Grafix. Of course for a live show, it would have to be Pendulum.
What’s your favourite thing about Razzmatazz as a venue?
Everything! The sound is wicked and the team of people there are awesome. Five rooms makes it easy to do different events with different sizes and after ten years running events in Barcelona, Razzmatazz is the MOST HONEST venue that I have ever worked with.
